Your business runs on data, and your data is growing. Our annual report, the State of SaaS Data Protection, highlights what you should know about data loss and corruption in the SaaS universe.
This year, we commissioned Forrester Research to conduct research of 1,350+ business and IT decision makers and influencers of their organization’s SaaS CRM applications from around the world.
A few notable thoughts, behaviors and trends that emerged in the last year:
Many organizations assume their CRM data is protected
It’s a myth that just because your data is in the cloud, it’s protected. The shared responsibility model helps keep data safe, but many organizations are still unaware they’re responsible for the data loss or corruption they create. The SaaS vendor is responsible for security of the cloud, but customers are responsible for security of their data in the cloud.
Data loss is inevitable
Your organization is likely to suffer a data loss. Three out of four respondents of one sample group — those aware of their organization’s responsibilities — suffered a data loss or corruption incident in the last 12 months.
But why is data protection so hard? Even if the SaaS provider platform has no security shortcomings, a single application has an infinite number of possibilities for mistakes and oversights. The challenge becomes infinitely more difficult when managing security settings across a tech stack composed of dozens of SaaS apps.
The three most common causes of data loss reported by respondents:
- Cyberattacks, such as ransomware
- Human error, such as accidentally mass deleting records
- Unanticipated consequences of integrating applications
It’s important to remember the vast majority of data loss and corruption issues aren’t tied to major events: Simple mistakes happen each and every day! And data loss and corruption can go unnoticed for days — even weeks.
Most organizations don’t fully salvage their data
In 2020, 64.2 zettabytes of data was created or replicated, according to IDC Global DataSphere research. For context, a zettabyte is 1,000 exabytes, and an exabyte is 1,000 petabytes. That’s a lot of account records, customer contact details and other critical information that fuels your business.
And they all have one thing in common: value.
But most organizations that suffer CRM data losses rarely recover 100% of their lost or corrupted data — the valuable data that tells the story of your business. And data loss disrupts business: Increased labor costs, data recovery fees, and a lost reputation are just a few ways missing data could impact the entire company. In our report, some organizations took days — even weeks — to recover.
A proactive solution protects your organization
The good news: 92% of respondents from organizations that have implemented third-party backup applications reported considerable benefits or cost savings from these backup and recovery practices.
A proactive data protection strategy prevents you from losing access to mission-critical SaaS data, so you never have to worry about data loss disrupting your business. A proactive solution can also help businesses optimize their SaaS environments, minimize risks, and boost trust, resilience and digital innovation.
