Toast continuously improves how they test and manage releases with Own

As part of the business systems team, Alex Abdou, Sr. Manager of Quality Assurance and DevOps, uses Salesforce for Toast’s entire customer journey.

Salesforce is very much an integral part of everything we do, from lead generation, to quoting, to onboarding case management, and even working with external contractors and knowledge base sites. If I think about all of our many tools within Toast, Salesforce sits right in the middle.

Toast’s business systems team is continuously working to improve how they test and manage releases, especially within Salesforce. As part of this process, they recognized that they needed a solution that could do more than just backup their data: They needed to be able to seed data in a sandbox to test before pushing to production.

Sandbox Seeding

Challenges

The solution they were using didn’t have the ability to seed data, so when renewal time came around, Alex and team evaluated other vendors that could better fit their needs.

The previous product was fairly one-dimensional, so when our contract was up, we started looking at Own.

With Own Accelerate, you can seed your sandbox with specific data — and anonymize that data. This propelled Own as the forerunner for Toast. Working with external contractors who have access to their Salesforce orgs, it was important for Alex and team to be able to anonymize data so that anyone outside of the company couldn’t obtain sensitive customer information.

Solution

Toast recently launched its IPO, a tremendous success for a company that continues to grow. With about 40 people on the technical team executing on requirements, and another 20 people on the product management team working in Salesforce, Toast’s business systems unit continues to grow — along with their use of Salesforce. Having Own gives Toast the resources they need to mature their deployment and release process, while managing the number of users with access.

I tell our teams to always vet the data that we change, and not just rely on having Own in case something goes wrong. We need to get it right the first time, but it’s still comforting to know that this data is backed up and easily recoverable with Own.

To make sure the team doesn’t miss anything, Alex has set up proactive alerts. With Smart Alerts, Alex can be notified if anything does change, and set thresholds to see only changes on specific data points that may be a statistical outlier.

We use real data in our sandboxes. That was an important piece of the puzzle when looking for a backup and recovery solution. We had to find a partner who could also seed this data into a testing environment.

Own is good at backup and recovery. I get that that's the bread and butter. But a lot of other vendors do that, and do it well. What really sets Own apart is the option to add features like sandbox seeding and anonymizing data. It makes a big difference.
